Announcing the finalists for the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023

The dedication to excellence shown by the nursing community across the world is a story deserving of a global audience. The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2023 is a celebration of their dedication and vision for healthcare. We shortlisted 10 finalists from 52,065 registrations across 202 countries this year. After a round of public voting, one finalist will be awarded the prize money of $250,000 at our gala ceremony in the dazzling city of London on International Nurses Day. The other nine finalists will also be given monetary prizes. Finalists We chose to amplify these 10 journeys on the global stage because of their devotion to enhancing the standards of modern healthcare across regions. They surmounted challenges of finance, geography, community engagement and much more to enrich millions of lives. By introducing holistic improvements in respective healthcare systems, these finalists created an indelible, positive impact.

Finalists the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award

Cathy Cribben-Pearse, OakTree Mentoring, UAE

She built a global platform for nurturing nursing aspirants and mentoring healthcare workers across the world. Currently, the platform connects hundreds of nurses from 55 countries.

Christine Mawia Sammy, Kitui County Referral Hospital, Kenya

Her work since 2010 in Kitui County of Kenya has brought a definitive impact on neonatal mortality – a drop from above 50% to less than 10%.


Gloria Itzel Ceballo Batista, Hospital del Niño Dr José Renán Esquivel, Panama

She runs training programmes for young nurses and has partnered with several multilateral organisations to implement life-saving measures in her hospital.

Jincy Jerry, The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Ireland

The challenges faced by Ireland’s healthcare infrastructure during the Covid-19 pandemic pushed Jincy Jerry to learn and implement robotic process automation.

Lilian Yew Siew Mee, Raffles Hospital PTE LTD, Singapore

She provided the direction and framework for the hospital to achieve the highest professional standards and quality goals, leading to manifold growth in patient care.

Margaret Helen Shepherd, Royal Devon University Healthcare, England

Her efforts to combat genetic diabetes brought a lasting impact on healthcare across the UK.

Michael Joseph Dino, Our Lady of Fatima University, Philippines

From a telehealth initiative for older adults to a programme to support and protect breastfeeding, his journey has enhanced thousands of lives.


Shanti Teresa Lakra, GB Pant Hospital-Port Blair, India

She worked with vulnerable tribal groups in remote parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to enrich lives with modern healthcare practices.

Teresa Fraga, Associação Nomeiodonada IPSS, Portugal

She established KASTELO, the first palliative care unit in Portugal for children with chronic illnesses to provide quality care.

Wilson Fungameza Gwessa, Muhimbili National Hospital-Mloganzila, Tanzania

His innovation, the Bubble CPAP device, is perfectly suited for use in rural hospitals with limited resources. After the machine was introduced in Mloganzila Hospital, neonatal respiratory deaths dropped from 14.1% to 5.9%.


Selection process

Our esteemed jury panel reviewed the registrations with our process partner E&Y. Each panel member has an illustrious legacy of work in healthcare. They represent excellence in research, healthcare, innovation, community initiatives and mental health practices.

The award is an initiative by Aster DM Healthcare, which is at the forefront of medical care with 30 hospitals, 125 clinics, 496 pharmacies and 177 labs and patient experience centres spread across seven countries. Over the last 36 years, it has been consistent in its mission to provide quality, affordable healthcare at the doorstep of the people it serves.
